Alamo Heights
601 Patterson Ave. (front yard) Turn west onto Patterson Avenue from Broadway. Patterson is the side street next to Central Market. Look for the traffic light at the faux bois bus-stop. Follow Patterson to the 600 block. 610 is at the corner of Patterson and Morton.
Large stepping stones and low-growing culinary herbs and perennials have replace the front lawn. Attractive beds include edible vegetables. Large palms and gingers provide privacy along the side street.
900 Cambridge Oval (front yard) From Patterson, turn on Morton Street to Cambridge Oval. Look for the contemporary Spanish-style, 2- story home on the corner.
The homeowner has used native and adaptive plants to create a landscape reminiscent of the Texas-Mexico border. Dense planting of poppies and other Texas wildflowers add springtime color.
405 Normandy Ave. (front yard) From Cambridge Oval, drive north on Townsend to Normandy Avenue and turn west. Normandy is off Broadway, near the Alamo Heights City Hall and Fire Station.
The homeowner is replacing lawn with beds of colorful perennials and spring wildflowers. Flowering, understory trees connect the space between ground and taller shade trees in back and side yards.
216 East Elmview (front yard) Between Broadway and North New Braunfels; second street north of Alamo Heights High School.
Large perennials planted curbside at the street provide privacy screen for cozy seating area with rock bench. Two large beds planted with native and adapted plants. Trees and shrubs are expertly pruned but retain their naturally attractive shape.
Brook Hollow
Off US 281 North between Bitters Rd. and Thousand Oaks
1926 Oakshire (back yard) Exit at Brook Hollow and drive East on Brook Hollow toward Jone- Maltsberger past Heimer Rd. Turn on Oakshire. Street turn-in is on the south- side of Brook Hollow.>/i>
The homeowners use rain water collected in 11 separate, full-size barrels for hand-watering plants. Lawn has been reduced by a large rock patio that expands the outdoor patio living area out to the center of the yard.
1902 Oakshire (back yard) Drive down Oakshire to the corner of Oakshire and Norland Drive. The house is on the left hand corner.
The homeowner brought the Asian Pacific Rim style with her when she relocated from Seattle, but she has used water-saving "Texas" plants in place of those used in the Northwest. Enter the back yard through a Japanese-style wood gate where separate "rooms" are connected with pathways, architectural features and koi pond.
1811 Oakline Drive (back yard) Turn right on Norland to Oakline and turn left. Oakline can also be accessed directly from Brook Hollow Drive.
A crushed granite path has replaced a shady side yard to connect the front and back yards. Watersaving Perennials and evergreens of varying size, shade and texture add interest to beds that line the privacy fences. Turf area has also been reduced by the addition of a large outdoor covered living and cooking area.
